It was the time when I was nursing my baby & faced quite a lot of challenges. There were quite a lot of questions in my mind, such as how to get through the phase safely, am I doing it right, do I need a breastfeeding pillow, how & where to buy nursing bras, how to find the best nursing bras or a pumping bra, and many more. So today in this post, I’m gonna share few tips from my nursing experience, to help all new lactating mothers.
Firstly, I noticed a lot of physical changes in my breasts during and after nursing. During nursing, they used to be quite hard, but after I fed my baby they used to get tender. That’s when I knew that I had to get proper nursing and/or pumping bra to protect my breasts during this phase.
You may notice that nursing and pumping bras are costlier than regular bras. Many moms make the mistake of buying regular, but bigger-sized bras while nursing to save money on nursing bras. However, nursing bras are really worth the price. They give you easy access to nurse your baby in such a way, that you and your baby feel absolutely comfortable during the nursing process.
With their comfortable and breathable fabric, nursing bras come with pull-down or push-aside cups. Thanks to these cups, you can have skin-to-skin contact with your baby while nursing.
Here are some of the common styles of nursing bras that you will come across when you set out to buy them:
- Underwire/Wireless bras
- Lined/Unlined bras
- Shaped/seamless bras
Apart from these, there are some special nursing bras that you can use for wearing overnight or when you want to pump. All of them are quite flexible and have many hooks to fit your changing breast sizes in the postpartum phase.
Here, I have listed down some of the best breastfeeding bras that not only make new moms comfortable, but are stylish in design as well.

How a nursing bras works?
The only difference between a nursing bra and a regular bra is that the former comes with a snap-down access in a V-shape, to allow new moms to nurse their babies easily. I used to have three sets of nursing bras – 2 for use in the day and 1 for use in the night.
How a pumping bras works?
Pumping bras are designed in such a way that they can suit breast pump flanges of all standard sizes. They help the breast pump to be attached to your breasts, so that you can pump with ease. They come with clips that can be removed to attach the flange to your nipple.
How do you choose the best nursing bras?
Here are some tips that you should keep in mind to ensure that you buy the best nursing or pumping bras for yourself:
Comfort & breathability – Never compromise on the quality of the fabric; you will be wearing these bras for a long time, so you have to feel comfortable in them.
Additional clasps – Choose nursing bras that come with many hook & eye closures to adapt to your changing breast sizes during your nursing phase. There are bras that have up to 6 columns of hooks so check yourself to know your requirements.
Pads – Always choose nursing bras that are lined or that come with padding. These help to absorb the milk leakage and save you from embarrassment.
Some other types of nursing bras you will come across are:
Cups that can be clipped down – Choose nursing bras that can be clipped and unclipped (as and when you want) with one hand, so that you can hold the baby close to your chest while nursing. If you want to nurse and pump at the same time, you can choose the bras that can be clipped separately for both purposes.
Bras that can be pulled down – Used mostly for night-time nursing, these bras are known as bralettes. They don’t have any clasps, clips, or hooks. You can pull them over your head and pull them down whenever you want, for easy access. They are usually made from soft and stretchable fabric.
